Don't confuse IT architecture with software architecture. Whereas software architecture deals with a single application IT architecture is about the overall IT landscape of an enterprise.
- Start by finding out what your business is really about. Express your core business principles in a few meaningful statements.
- Generate pictures, diagrams and other documents to effectively communicate your business principles.
- Derive all requirements for your IT landscape from the needs of your business.
- Figure out and discuss options. Descend from general to specific.
- Analyse your existing IT landscape with respect to the IT architecture you developed.
- Try to align your existing IT landscape to your IT architecture. Use options.
IT architecture may start as project but is an ongoing process. Your business develops. Technical and organisational changes may occur. You gain new insight. Don't stop thinking and communicating.
