Open source covers a wide range of licence models and business concepts. You can find a good overview of open source licenses on http://www.ifross.org/ifross_html/lizenzcenter-en.html. The most popular open source license is GPL.
When you use open source software you have to keep in mind that the author can change his licensing or other relevant aspects in the future. (Of course only for further development.). See for example the following discussion. Although it's about the distribution strategy rather than about licensing it clearly demonstrates the different positions in the open source scene. Another example is Oracle abandoning glassfish commercial support.
An argument brought forward against open source software in enterprise environments is the lack of vendor support. This argument is based on the assumption that a vendor provides high quality support. On the other hand: If the vendors support is only expensive but not helpful you don't have the choice to chance to a different support partner.
